Hi, everybody. Let's look at our next question. The interlobar veins are formed by the convergence of which smaller veins within the kidney. A cortical radiate veins, b arcuate veins, c segmental veins or D renal veins. So we've got a collection of different veins here. One nice thing is that in general, the names of the blood vessels in the kidney are the same in with arteries versus veins. So you've only got to learn one set of names. Our problem is asking about veins, however, but I think it's helpful when trying to keep these different veins in order rather than just trying to reel off a list to draw just a brief kind of basic diagram. Think about the parts of the kidney and then that will help us remember where the blood vessels are flowing and in which order. So we're talking about the smaller veins. So we can assume we're going to start within the structure of a single lobe of the kidney. So as we recall that we have those pyramids, the renal pyramids which are the medulla of the kidney. I always think of them as looking somewhat like a grapefruit segment. They're called pyramids. But that's what I think of. So I've drawn my little uh triangular or cone shaped renal pyramid and we know that that is the mala and then as we move towards the surface of the kidney, we have the cortex and that's sort of at the base of that pyramid. And we know the blood supply has to come into or out of the kidney and then it has to flow between the lobes of the kidney around the Mandula and then into the cortex and in the cortex, we have the nephrons. So in the nephrons, we're getting down to the level of capillaries, you're having all that um nutrient or excuse me, all the waste exchange ion exchange, things like that going on in the capillaries. So when we're talking about the veins, we're thinking of deoxygenated blood blood flowing out of the kidneys back to the heart. So I've drawn my rough little pyramid here to keep sort of the basic small anatomy in mind. And then I'm going to draw my kidney just very roughly. And we know we have this giant vein, giant artery going towards the kidney and kind of branching out when it enters the kidney. So that that's kind of the biggest vessels going into and out of the kidney. So let's think about the order here. Well, we have the capillaries in the nephron from the capillaries, blood flows out into the venues. And now we're in the cortex, the vein is getting a little bit bigger but still very small. I've done the diagram in blue so far now I'm just going to add red even though their veins, they're usually drawn in blue. I'm just going to, I'm just trying to get some different colors here. I have these little small veins so we can remember that these little veins radiating out into the cortex are the cortical radiate, radiate veins. In the same way, you might draw the sun with little rays radiating out from it. You have the little veins radiating out into the cortex and that blood needs to be brought back to be carried out of the central vein of the kidney. So from the cortex, veins have to run along the border between the cortex and the medulla that cortico medullary junction and these veins running along that border are the arcuate veins. So acute veins run along the border between those two parts from there. The blood will be brought back through the area between the different lobes. So through the renal columns, and as one would expect these veins running in between the lobes of the kidney or then the interlobar veins. And then finally those intralobar veins are going to run into those branches that have come off from the main veins coming out of the kidney or excuse me, we're going out of the kidney in this case. So these veins will run into the branches that are going to converge into the main vein out of the kidney. So I've drawn lines connecting the interlobar veins into my second diagram, which is just a picture of the kidney itself to the area where you have these little branches going off into the kidney. So this one's a little bit the one exception to the arteries and veins having the same name, the arteries that run from the main renal artery and then begin branching off are called the segmental arteries. And there are sort of corresponding veins, but they don't have that name. So officially, there are no segmental veins. So I'm actually going to cross off Choice C which is segmental veins because officially according to anatomy, official terminology, there are no segmental veins. So these sort of branched off structures would be called the segmental arteries in the arteries. But that doesn't exist in the veins. And then finally, the blood combining into these branches and converging into this giant vein coming out of the kidney. And that would be the renal vein, the main vein coming out of the kidney. So if I were to turn back to the flow chart, I had started, I'd written a nephron of capillaries to venues, those venues go to the cortical radiant veins which then flow into the arcuate veins and from there into the inter lober veins and from there through the little branches that converge into the renal veins. So now that we kind of have the flow of this. In order we can go back to our answer choices. And our answer is asking us about the interlobar veins and saying which smaller veins converge into the intralobar veins. And we can see that that is the arcuate veins which flow go along that medullary cortical junction and flow then between the lobes in those renal columns into the inter lobe, our veins. So our answer is going to be choice B the arcuate veins, we can eliminate choice A, the cortical radiate veins because they flow into the arcuate veins, not the intralobar veins. And we can eliminate choice d renal veins because the renal veins are the big main vein coming out of each kidney. So again, the convergence of choice B arcuate veins forms the interlobar veins.
