Chapter 20 (Heart): Part 1
Terms in this set (10)
Coronary Circulation
supplies blood to the muscle tissues of the heart
Coronary Arteries
Carry blood to the heart to provide it with oxygen
When does blood enter the coronary arteries?
When the L. ventricle is relaxed
Coronary Sinus
returns blood in the large vein back to the R. atrium to become oxygenated
What is CAD (Coronary Artery Disease)
partial or complete blockage of the coronary arteries due to coronary ischemia which reduces cardiac performance;
caused by atherosclerotic plaques
Coronary Ischemia
reduction of blood flow leads to inadequate perfusion
Angina Pectoris
The symptoms of CAD:
sensation of pressure, chest constriction, and pain
Myocardial Infarction/Heart Attack
part of the coronary circulation is blocked and cardiac muscle cells die from lack of oxygen;
results from severe CAD and Coronary Thrombosis
25% die before getting help
65% under 50 die in the first hour
Coronary Thrombosis
Thrombus/clot formation at the plaque, which obstructs the vessel
What are the treatments of CAD and MI
Aspirin and Coumadin (reduce clotting)
Noninvasive Surgery, like CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft) where a vessel is grafted to create a detour around an obstructed artery
