Understand that mitosis is the process of cell division that results in two genetically identical daughter cells. It consists of several phases that occur in a specific sequence.

Begin with Prophase, where the chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, and the mitotic spindle begins to form. The nuclear envelope starts to break down.

Next is Metaphase, where the chromosomes align at the metaphase plate, which is the equatorial plane of the cell. The spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of the chromosomes.

Following Metaphase is Anaphase, where the sister chromatids are pulled apart by the spindle fibers and move toward opposite poles of the cell.

Finally, Telophase occurs, where the chromosomes arrive at the poles, begin to de-condense back into chromatin, and are enclosed by a re-forming nuclear envelope. This phase is followed by cytokinesis, which divides the cytoplasm and completes cell division.
