Understand that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a molecule found in the outer membrane of certain prokaryotic cells.
Recall the structural differences between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria: Gram-positive bacteria have a thick peptidoglycan layer but lack an outer membrane, while Gram-negative bacteria have a thin peptidoglycan layer and an outer membrane.
Recognize that LPS is a major component of the outer membrane, which is characteristic of Gram-negative bacteria.
Note that Archaea have different cell wall compositions, such as pseudomurein, and do not contain LPS.
Understand that Mycoplasma species lack a cell wall entirely and therefore do not have LPS.
