hey everyone in this example, we need to refer to the below pairs of atoms and identify whether the bond between the pairs will either be ionic or covalin. We need to recognize that if the bond is covalin we need to identify whether it will be polar or non polar Covalin. So we want to recall our concept of the change in the electro negativity or the difference in election negativity. And we should recall that based on the different values for delta Ian that's going to be associated with various bond types. So we should recall that for a election negativity difference equal to zero. That's going to be course responding to a pure Covalin bond. However, if we have an electro negativity difference equal to a value of either . or .4 this is considered a small difference. And so that will be associated with a non polar covalin bond type moving forward. If we get an electro negativity difference with a value equal to between .5-1.7, that would be associated as a polar Covalin bond. And then lastly, if we have an electro negativity difference between Or sorry, greater than 1.7 this would correspond to the bond type being an ionic bond. And so we want to go ahead and after recalling these facts, we're going to keep this in mind as we analyze examples A through D. So first looking at example a we want to go ahead and assign the electro negativity value to each of these atoms. So we should recall for chlorine, we are going to have an election activity value when we look it up in our textbooks Of 3.0. And we should recall that flooring which has an electro negativity value of 4.0. Is the most electro negative atom on our periodic tables. And so to find our delta e. n. We would take the higher election negativity from flooring 4.0 and subtract that from our lower election negativity 3.0 And this is going to give us a delta in value equal to 1.0 and so because it falls within the range of the polar covalin bond type, we would say that therefore the bond between chlorine and floor Een would be a polar covalin bond. And so this would be our answer for part A of this example. Moving on to part B. We're comparing sulfur with oxygen. We should recall sulfur selection negativity value equal to a value of 3.0. Whereas oxygen we should recall has also an election negativity value of 4. And so to find our difference in electro negativity, we would take 4.0 -3.0 and this is also going to give us a delta in value equal to 1.0 and so therefore we would say that we have a polar covalin bond as our answer for part B. So moving forward, we have part C. Next where we're comparing potassium to the chlorine atom. We want to recall or sorry, potassium electro negativity value As a value of .8 whereas chlorine has an election negativity value equal to three point oh and so we would say that our difference in electro negativity of these atoms is going to be three point oh minus 3.0.8. And this difference is going to give us a value equal to 2.2. And so because 2.2 is greater than 1.7 we would say. Therefore this falls within the range of an ionic bond between these two atoms. So this would be our answer for part C. And lastly we have part D. Where we're comparing nitrogen to the chlorine atom. So we should recall that nitrogen has an electro negativity value of 3.0. Whereas chlorine has an electro negativity value of also three point oh and so our difference in electro negativity is three point oh minus three point oh, which gives us a value equal to zero. And so we would say that this bond is going to be a pure covalin bond Because it's equal to a value of zero as its difference in electro negativity. So this is our answer to complete part D.
