And when we think about these electron carriers in our citric acid cycle, we have F AD and N AD plus that in parentheses. Now, if we can't remember this right off the bat. Let's remember that when we're talking about oxidation and reduction reduction, you think bringing down decreasing and reduction decreases the oxidation number of something by becoming more negative taking on more negative charge. So in if an element is being reduced, it's gaining electrons. So we can recall that F ad as an electron carrier carries two electrons carries a pair. So we put gains electrons, oops I'm gonna put gains two electrons. We already know what gains them. Gains two. I'm going to put E and then a negative there. The common abbreviation for electrons gains two electrons. And then you can't just have this molecule running around with a negative two charge. F AD is a neutral molecule. So you need to add enough protons to balance that negative charge. So we need to add H plus to balance the charge. So we have a neutral molecule F ad is neutral, it gains two electrons with a charge of negative two. So we need to add two protons. So that would give us our abbreviation of FA DH two. We've added two hydrogens to balance those electrons that it's taken on. And just a side note, you can use the same sort of thought process for N AD plus, which is our other electron acceptor. It also accepts a pair of electrons. But N ad plus already has a positive charge. So gaining two electrons gaining negative two charge, you only need to add one hydrogen to balance that.
