Well, one thing that should jump out at us right away is the name of Von Leeuwenhoek because we should recognize him as one of the earliest names in microbiology. In fact, he's often credited as being the father of microbiology. Although we have a matching pair of Pasteur and father of microbiology because next to his name, we have first photomicrograph of bacteria. But Lieben Hoek is working in the 16 hundreds to 17 hundreds. So he's much too early for a photomicrograph. Photography has not been invented yet. So this is our incorrect pair and I'll put an X by it and this will be our answer. Leeuwenhoek is or Leuven Hoek is not noted for being the first to see these microscopic organisms. So the first to see bacteria first to see protozoa, he was a, a lens grinder. So he developed magnifying lenses and essentially the first way of looking at things small enough to see these microbes. The first person that took a photo myograph of bacteria was Robert Koch, who is often more well known in the microbiology world for his for postulates of disease. But he was the first person to use a photograph of what he was seeing through the microscope. So if uh Von Leeuwenhoek boy, it's hard to say his name. Von Leeuwenhoek is uh credited sometimes as a father of microbiology. Why isn't choice? A Louis Pasteur and father of microbiology incorrect. Well, first of all, choice D is definitively more incorrect being just a completely wrong era for this discovery. But Louis Pasteur does definitely have a claim to this title. Um just by the sheer number of his carefully conducted studies of microorganisms. So his use of the scientific method um designing experiments carefully, um they're carefully controlled and made so many different discoveries. Um particularly he definitively disproved spontaneous generation. So he wasn't the first to do that, but his experiments were so well conducted that there just was no longer any argument on that front. So definitely has a claim to that title, Father of Microbiology. So you wouldn't consider this an incorrectly matched pair. Then Joyce B. Joseph Lister, founder of antiseptic surgery. This is correct. He was a surgeon that began widely using antiseptic techniques in his surgeries and demonstrating that this reduced death rates. And it's somewhat of a common theme like pure. He wasn't the first person to demonstrate this. Um Semmelweis was the first person to show that washing hands in between patients in um postpartum women reduce the death rate from childbed fever. But his ideas didn't get accepted in a widespread way. It was lister that really um people began to accept this idea. And so he's kind of credited as this founder of antiseptic surgery in particular. So Choice B A correct pairing. So not our answer. And then Choice C Edward Jenner and a smallpox immunization. He was the one that discovered you could inoculate someone with cowpox and this made them immune to smallpox. So previously, attempts at preventing smallpox had involved um specifically giving someone the disease in a controlled way that might give them a less severe case, but definitely had a risk of death. Whereas here you were deliberately introducing a related microorganism that would not make a person severely ill and then giving them immunity to the disease you were trying to prevent.
