During transcription, the enzyme RNA polymerase binds to the DNA at a specific region called the promoter.

RNA polymerase unwinds the DNA and synthesizes a single strand of mRNA by matching RNA nucleotides to the complementary DNA bases: adenine (A) pairs with uracil (U), cytosine (C) pairs with guanine (G), guanine (G) pairs with cytosine (C), and thymine (T) pairs with adenine (A).

Once the mRNA strand is synthesized, it detaches from the DNA and undergoes processing before being used in translation to synthesize proteins.
