General Chemistry I Course Objectives

  • Understand the basic structure of the atom.

  • Understand the need for elements to react and form compounds.

  • Understand the types of chemical reactions.

  • Understand the ways to calculate the energy absorbed or released.

  • Understand the trends in the periodic table.

  • Understand molecular geometries and polarity.

  • Understand the three states of matter (gases, liquids, solids) in more detail.

  • Understand intra- and inter-molecular forces.

Evaluation and Grading Procedures

  • Semester Exams I, II, & III: 3 exams @ 125 pts each (375 pts total)

  • Mastering Chemistry Quizzes: 6 sets, best 5 @ 15 pts each (75 pts total)

  • Mastering Chemistry Homework: 12 sets, best 10 @ 10 pts each (100 pts total)

  • Laboratory: Minimum 50% grade required (200 pts total)

  • Cumulative Final Exam: 250 pts

  • Total: 1000 pts
