The dodo bird (Raphus cucullatus) lived on the Mauritius Islands until the arrival of European sailors, who quickly hunted the large, placid, flightless bird to extinction. Rapid morphological evolution such as often accompanies island isolation had caused the bird's huge size and obscured its physical resemblance to any near relatives. However, sequencing of mitochondrial DNA from dodo bones reveals that they were pigeons, closely related to the Nicobar pigeon from other islands in the Indian Ocean. Why was mitochondrial DNA suited to the study of this extinct species?

Which best describes mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)?
A
It is a linear DNA molecule found in the mitochondria and inherited randomly.
B
It is a circular DNA molecule found in the mitochondria and inherited maternally.
C
It is a circular DNA molecule found in the chloroplast and inherited paternally.
D
It is a linear DNA molecule found in the nucleus and inherited from both parents.

1
Understand that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is a type of DNA located specifically in the mitochondria, which are organelles responsible for energy production in cells.
Recall that mtDNA is distinct from nuclear DNA, which is linear and found in the cell nucleus; mtDNA is typically circular in structure.
Recognize the pattern of inheritance for mtDNA: it is inherited maternally, meaning it is passed down from the mother to offspring without recombination from the father.
Eliminate options that describe mtDNA as linear or located in the nucleus or chloroplast, or inherited paternally, since these do not match the known characteristics of mtDNA.
Conclude that the best description of mtDNA is that it is a circular DNA molecule found in the mitochondria and inherited maternally.
