Hi, everybody. Let's take a look at our next question. It says, consider the line angle structure for the given compound. And we have a structure written here and we'll talk about that as we think about it. What is its condensed structural formula? And Iupac name. So let's look at the structure we're given. First, we want to look at how many carbons are in this chain. So we'll go ahead and number them 123456. We may want to renumber them as we name our substituents. But for now, we want to know how many carbons are in this gene. We also need to check. Is this the longest chain possible? We looked at the one that kind of jumps out to us. But is there another alternate way of numbering that could give us a longer chain of carbons? We do have a methyl branch on the second to last carbon. But since we just have one more carbon after that, that doesn't make any difference. So we could have labeled the last the carbon in our methyl branch as six, doesn't matter either way. So we know that for our name, we have a root name of hexane six carbons, all single bonds. Now, let's look at our substituents as we numbered it. On carbon three, we have a bromine atom. On carbon four, we have a chlorine and on carbon five, we have a methyl group. So let's look at how they're numbered and whether we want to stick with this numbering system as we're naming this, we want the numbers to give us the lowest possible number for the substituents. So let's look at the way I've numbered them here as we count along our carbons. We have 123 and our broad beans on carbon three. So our earliest substituent on carbon three if we numbered it in the other direction. So let's number that in red, I would have 12 and then I have a methyl group on carbon two. So this gives me a lower number for the first substituent. So I actually want to erase my original numbering system, which was useful to tell me the number of carbons I had. But I won't want to use that numbering system to name my substituents. So we'll continue on numbering three, 456. So we'll use that numbering to come up with the rest of our name. So let's look at the three substituents we have here and then figure out what order we'll list them in. So on carbon two, we have a methyl group. So we'd label out two hyphen methyl note we have a hyphen between the number and the name. We'll put a comma separating any numbers. On carbon three, we have a chlorine. So that will be three chloro and then on carbon four, we have a bromine. So that will be four bromo. Now to decide how we put them in order, when we list our name. That's fairly simple. We're going to list them in alphabetical order which wrote ABC order and we will discount any prefixes to tell us the number like die or try. We don't have that in this case because we only have one of each type of substituent. So we'll start with BROMO, which is first. So we'll have four hyphen bromo. Our next one and off the quarter is Chloro. So then we'll have hyphen three hyphen Chloro. I'm going to run out of room. So I'm going to erase where I wrote Hexane and continue writing my name after Clora. The last one is methyl. So two hyphen methyl and then no space. Then we write our chain name, which is Hexane. Oops Hexane. So we've got our Iupac name. Now, we just need to write this as a condensed structural formula. So recall that condensed structural formulas uh show burns, that show how atoms are arranged, but show ch groups as letters. So things like CH two, ch three, they don't show specifically those ch bonds. So we have our six carbon chain that we know. Now if I were just drawing this from scratch based on the name, I would probably start with the carbon one. But to make it a little less confusing, I can draw it to correspond with the way my line angle structure is drawn, it doesn't matter it, you know, the name will be the same. So in this case, I'm starting with carbon six. So I know I have two carbons that have no substituents. So I just write them as their CH group. So I have CH three. So just written as ach group and then I do show a line showing the bond from carbon to carbon. And then ch two notice it doesn't show the actual bond because obviously, those hydrogens are not in the middle of those two carbons. But because we know what the arrangement of hydrogens must be, we just write them as this group that keeps our structure from getting too cluttered up as you would in an expanded structure that shows every single bond. So I've got my two carbons with no substituents on to the carbon that has a bromine. So this would be a carbon and I have this carbon has three bonds. So I have one hydrogen here. So I'll put ch I have a bromine group here. So I draw a line going up or down doesn't matter and write in BR for that one. Now my next carbon three bonds, two carbons and a chlorine. So one hydrogen, I'll draw a bond going up and write in CL for chlorine and then go along to my next carbon which has a methyl group. So I'll draw CH and then this time I'll draw a line going down just so I don't clutter this up and ran out of space down to CH three again, drawing that metal group as ach letter group there. And then my last terminal carbon I have line and then CH three. I'm not worrying too much about whether my groups are going up or down. Just because a condensed structure like this doesn't show the geometry of these bonds as a line structure does a better job of. So once again, here's my condensed structure drawn as CH three dash CH two dash CH with a bromine attached dash CH with a chlorine attached dash dash ch with a metal group attached dash CH three.
